The Precious Treasure of Space and Awareness

Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen Rinpoche (1859-1935) was one of the most powerful masters of Dzogchen of our time. He was born in the Shzardza region of Kham, East Tibet, into the Hor clan. When he was nine years old, his extraordinary abilities were recognised by his main teacher Lama Tenzin Wangyal. From this master he received his fundamental education and many transmissions. His root monastery was Dza Tengchen Gompa where he was also ordinated as monk. During this time he had twenty four teachers who belonged to the Yungdrung Bon as well as the new Bon. Personally he mainly practices the Dru tradition of the Menri monastery. At the age of thirty four he moved back into a small retreat hut in Shardza, his region of origin. Over the years he became very famous and attracted many students. In this way eventually a meditation centre developed below his hut in the village Gethang. Eventhough Shardza Rinpoche was a Bon lama, he became one of the most outstanding masters of the non-sectarian Rime movement of the 19th century. So his students came from different Buddhist schools as well as Bon monasteries. At the end of his life he withdrew in a small tent and through Dzogchen practice he realised the Jalü, the rainbow body of light whereby the physical body of the practitioner dissolves in radiating pure energy. This event was observed by many.

During his life time Shardza Rinpoche composed five main works based on his encompassing knowledge on the teaching and practice of Bon known as the "Five Treasures" (mDzod lnga):

1. Legshe Rinpoche Dzö, “The Precious Treasure of Clear Achievement” an exploration on the history of Bon

2. Denö Rinpoche Bön, “The Precious Treasure of Scripts” discourse on the different questions of teaching

3. Lungrig Rinpoche Dzö, “The Precious Treasure of Scripts and Reason” a comparative analysis of the nine ways of Bon

4. Namkha Rinpoche Dzö, “The Precious Treasure of skys” mainly contains Ritual texts, including empowerments

5. Yingrig Rinpoche Dzö, “The Precious Treasure of Space and Awareness” a collection of Dzogchen teachings and practices.

During the retreat Yongdzin Rinpoche Lopon Tenzin Namdak, the most important living Master of Dzogchen in the Bon tradition, will start presenting the teachings of Shardza Rinpoche on Yingrig Rinpoche Dzö. Thereby he will be supported by Khenpo Tenpa Yungdrung.
