Swiss yaks collect for Dolpo yaks – Joint project with yak farmers in Valais

Transit of the Alps: On foot with yaks from the Swiss Alps to the Mediterranean. Two extraordinary women collect money for a project of the Tapriza NGO in an unique way. In autumn 2011 Rosula Blanc and Sonja Mathis traversed the Alps from north to south with their yakes they covered 600 kilometers in eight weeks and crossed twenty passes. The aim was to find sponsors for every kilometer they walked together. With the collected money a new project of the Tapriza NGO in Dolpo is supported.

Yaks are the livelihood of most inhabitants of Dolpo. The loss of an animal through avalanches or illnesses threatens the existence of the owner. The yak project in Dolpo will improve the yak breeding and animal health through exchange with other yak owners, boosting of the breed with a new yak bull and occasional visits of veterinaries in the region. It is planned to provide the yak caravans and the woman on the summer pastures with first-aid kits for the people and the animals. Another possibility of the project is to support families with large loss of animals, poor families or single mothers with a new yak.

Locally a yak committee was founded with representatives of the different alms and the first contributions have been deposited in the fund. The contributions will come from donations of the local yak owners and from abroad. Further infos to the caravan in Switzerland see www.yaks.ch.

The yak project can still be supported.
